BVI takes 'Mula' Spain rights. Radford drama takes place during war

BVI has taken Spanish distribution rights to Michael Radford's Civil War romantic drama "La mula," sales agent Capricorn Ent. announced Sunday at Cannes.

Further territories are under discussion, said Capricorn topper Daniel Wuthrich.

"Mula" marks a return to foreign-language filmmaking for Radford, 13 years after "Il Postino."

The $10 million "Mula" turns on a soldier who saves a stray mule by hiding it among his company's other mules. Man and animal form a special bond as they face the last months of the war.

Toplining Spanish thesps Oscar Jaenada ("Camaron") and Maria Valverde ("Melissa P.") and produced by Alejandra Frade and Bruce St. Clair at Madrid's Gheko Films, "Mula" is skedded to shoot in late fall.
